MUSIC AS HEALER

Music as Healer workshop - Shuswap Hospice
Workshop at Shuswap Hospice Convension

Over the last ten years I have been performing and presenting Music as Healer programs for hospice organizations throughout BC, from Chilliwack, Creston and Boundary Country up to Salmon Arm and way up north to Fort Nelson. These programs allow participants to sing along with songs that are familiar, touching and meaningful, songs that take us through all emotions, from joy and laughter to tears of sorrow. In the workshops there is also discussion on how music is meaningful in our lives, how it affects us, and how important it is when we are going through transitions of any kind, particularly death. We discuss how music is helpful for those who are passing and for those who are grieving. Each participant is brought in to share their favourite music.

REVIEWS

“We both feel that the most important thing about the whole concert was all the healing which took place, all the people who were touched by your music … all the people who felt some closure by placing a name in the jar.”

Excellent – Rosemary Phillips is an excellent teacher, songstress and songwriter and presented a powerful learning experience. Music “is” a wonderful healer to help us get in touch with our feelings. Music knows no limits and passes all borders.

SONGS WRITTEN FOR HEALING

To support this kind of performance and workshop I have written songs that touch on the subject of "Going Home", with titles like "Reach for the Star" about someone who is afraid to go, "Candle of Light", and "Thank You", ending the CD with "The Opening Door". Follow the link to Homemade with Rosemary to see information about the CD and sound samples of each song. A visit to the Lyrics page on this site will lead you to the words for each of the songs. My latest CD Me and My Guitar touches on the lighter side of life - and in times of transition we must not forget to be joyous and laugh.

JOHN DENVER SONGS

I like to include several songs written by that gifted singer/songwriter John Denver. Many of his lyrics speak of the journey through life and of home. Such titles as "Sweet Surrender" and "On the Wings of a Dream" say so much. Most importantly to me though is the song "Yellowstone (Coming Home)" which was written just before he himself went Home. The words are so beautiful and provide such comfort, to let us know that we are never alone, and that it's a "sweet coming home." I like to close all the concerts and workshops with this song because of it's power and energy. I was invited to close the hospice conference in Shuswap in 2005 with this song. Here you see the photo.

OVER THE RAINBOW

Memory Jar in concerts for Hospice
Memory Jar at Hospice Concert in Grand Forks

The biggest concert I have done to date with the theme of Music as Healer was "Over the Rainbow" held at The Port Theatre in Nanaimo, BC in 1999. It was a celebration of life, a healing concert. Talent in the concert came from as far away as Montreal. Each performer was invited to share their own healing experience and bring along an item of remembrance for a loved one to place in a special display at the side of the stage. Along with this display was a blue vase in which everyone was invited to place a slip of paper with the name of someone they wished to remember. At intermission the line-up filled the aisles.

One review stated, “Rosemary's concert was very moving from the beginning... Her voice alone touches one's soul... add that to her stage presence, choice of music and the way she weaves her choice of songs throughout her story, it is very spiritually uplifting.”

A HEALING DRAWING

On a similar subject, above you see a drawing done in coloured chalks. This is what I have come to call a healing drawing - or rather Colour You Healthy. This drawing was created for a relative who was with cancer, and although the relative rallied and said he was going to lick it, this drawing said otherwise. I was totally surprised by the result, not knowing what the colours were doing until I was finished. To me it looks like a fetus - which would indicate new life. I couldn't send it right away but waited a week. It arrived by his bed side just after he started slipping into the final stages. He was indeed going Home, to new life.
